An elderly man who was found dead in a rubbish bin full of water in Sydney’s south-west on Wednesday appears to have committed suicide, police said.

The man’s body was discovered head first in the bin early in the morning at a home in Fairfield.

A crime scene was established but NSW police told Daily Mail Australia the man appeared to have self-harmed.

Items were purposely placed around the bin indicating a suicide, a spokesperson said.

Officers said they searching for the man’s next of kin.

Police were pictured at the scene talking to neighbours.

The man’s body was removed around 1pm by authorities.
