A four-year-old boy has died from severe burns after fire tore through a timber house on Queensland’s Darling Downs on Tuesday night.

The boy’s three-year-old brother remains in a critical condition at Lady Cilento Hospital.

A spokesperson for the hospital confirmed the four-year-old had passed away in hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

The boys’ father, 34, managed to drag his children outside as the blaze completely destroyed their timber house at Weranga around 7.30pm on Tuesday.

‘The two children suffered 89 to 90 per cent burns to their whole body and the father suffered burns to his arms,’ Queensland Fire and Emergency Rescue spokesman Cameron Ashmore said.

The father was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a critical condition, while his two boys were airlifted to the Lady Cilento.

Neighbour Donna Marie Dick, who lives across the road from the 13 hectare property, told The Chronicle emergency services had struggled to find the property, which was 500m back from the road.

‘They [fire services] just sort of drove up the road and a couple of them sort of went around the cul-de-sac and then they came back down past my house and then down [the street],’ she said.

‘I think they need to work something out with council with these yellow poles so the emergency services know where they’re actually going; instead of trying to find lot numbers.’

The father’s condition is now stable with burns to his arms.

It’s believed the house did not have smoke alarms and all three were asleep when the fire started.

No one else was in the house at the time.

Fire investigators are combing the ruins to determine what caused the blaze.
