Same-sex marriage campaigners, some of whom have been fighting for years, were outside federal Parliament dancing and singing ahead of the final debates ahead the final round of debates in the House of Representatives. If passed, the vote would conclude over a decade of debate, more than 20 failed bills, and a national survey on the issue. More than 100 MPs had delivered speeches over the past week, many emotional, with most in support of changes to the Marriage Act. Before the vote was to be finalised later on Thursday, the House of Representatives was set to debate a number of proposed conservative amendments that were expected to be voted down, according to BuzzFeed News. Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, one of the strongest opponents of same-sex marriage, tweeted on Thursday morning he would not “divide” on the issue.
