Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate will undergo surgery for bowel cancer after being diagnosed with the disease last month.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Mr Tate said he was “nervous” about the operation but believed the result would be positive.
“I’m a half full kind of guy… we’ll get through it,” the 58-year-old said.
“The good Lord must think I’m pretty thick because he’s woken me up twice in one year.
“I cherish every day.”
Mr Tate saved his wife Ruth’s life in June when she suffered a heart attack by performing CPR for up to 25 minutes before paramedics arrived with a defibrillator.
Deputy Mayor Donna Gates has been appointed acting mayor indefinitely while Mr Tate recovers.
“We just pray for the best outcome,” Cr Gates said.
