Kids given Nazi assignment

PARENTS have expressed outrage after their children were asked to create a Nazi mascot as part of a homework assignment in the US state of Georgia.

The middle schoolteacher at Shiloh Middle School in Gwinnett County allegedly gave the grade six students the project as part of a social studies class, Fox News reports.

A picture of one child’s work, along with the instructions for the assignment, was posted online. The directions on the page read as follows:

“The year is 1935 and you have been tasked with creating a mascot to represent the Nazi party at its political rallies,” the assignment read.

“Think about all of the information that you have learned about Hitler and the Nazi party. You will create a COLORFUL illustration of the mascot. Give the mascot a NAME. You will also write an explanation as to why the mascot was chosen to represent the Nazi party.”

Parent Jamie Brown told Fox 5 that he was shocked when he saw what his child has been asked to do.

“I think more so a bad decision made by one individual teacher,” he said.

Mr Brown said the assignment was particularly inappropriate given the current racial tensions and political landscape in America.

“I just don’t think, right now, at this time and place in America this is the time for that. We need to start looking at the things that bring us together and stop looking at things that separate us as a human race,” said Mr Brown.

“I can only imagine the pain of other students the pain of other students that are of Jewish descent that you would be forced to draw something that is absolutely demeaning to not only you but an entire race of people and this nation,” he told Fox 5.

Another parent, Toyka Waller told WSB-TV2 she was actually thought the whole thing was a joke when her daughter told her about it.

While Gwinnett County Schools said learning about Nazism and the Holocaust are part of the curriculum, they said in a statement that that particular assignment had not been approved.

“This assignment is not a part of the approved materials provided by our Social Studies department and is not appropriate and the school is addressing the use of this assignment with the teacher.”
