King-sized surf set to hit WA coastline this weekend

It might not be death on a stick but the swell forecast for the weekend is huge.
It might not be death on a stick but the swell forecast for the weekend is huge.

It won’t quite be swimming weather but surfers’ ears might prick up with the promise of a bumper swell hitting the South West and Perth coasts this weekend.

In metropolitan waters, the swell could peak at four metres on Sunday morning.

And between Cape Naturaliste and Walpole – including Margaret River – it’s going to be even bigger, with a four to six-metre swell forecast for late Saturday morning and five metres again on Sunday morning.

Whether surfers can take advantage of the conditions will be largely dependent on the wind strength and direction, with south-westerly breezes predicted on Saturday but south-easterlies in the offing on Sunday morning.

The Swellnet surf cameras off Margaret River captured some pretty impressive-looking surf earlier today and with those swell predictions, it will be even bigger on the weekend.

The looming conditions had the Bureau of Meteorology excited enough to send out this chart on Thursday afternoon.

If it all plays out as hoped, some of these WA surfing hot spot could be cranking over the weekend:
