Emerging stayer Material Man earned nominal favouritism for the Bunbury Cup (2200m) with a hard-fought victory in yesterday’s Listed Prince Of Wales Hotel Cup (2019m) at Bunbury.
After unexpectedly racing outside of the lead, Material Man ($1.70 favourite) hit the front early in the straight and staved off a late challenge from My Magic Miss ($101) to score by half a length.
Dark Alert ($20) flashed home for an eye-catching third.
Material Man boosted his record to eight wins from 12 starts and will start a popular favourite in Thursday week’s Listed Bunbury Cup.
“Halfway down the straight it looked like they were going to get him, but he kept fighting,” trainer Justin Warwick said.
“He was good enough to hold them off.
“This time last year he won a maiden at Narrogin and he’s worked his way through the classes well.
“He’s a good horse. He’s got a good turn of foot and doesn’t get tired.”
Winning jockey Chris Parnham praised Material Man’s toughness and stamina.
“He lobbed outside of the leader at a pretty moderate gallop,” Parnham said.
“He takes a bit of riding, but once he lets down there’s a motor there.
“I thought his win today was full of merit and he showed he’s a pretty good stayer.”
