WATCH: Pro cyclist nearly takes out little old lady with dog during race

There are all kinds of ways a professional cyclist might come unstuck at high speed but Slovakian star Peter Sagan almost found a new method during the final stage of Italy’s Tirreno-Adriatico road race.

Vision captured by the world champion’s team showed him flying along a straight stretch of road, only to be interrupted by…an elderly lady walking her dog over a cross-walk.

Unable to reach his brakes, the quick-thinking Sagan veered off the road and onto the footpath around spectators and deftly avoided a bad accident but it was a bizarre and frightening close call.

In staying upright, Sagan helped preserve a strong showing at the Tirreno-Adriatico, where he had two stage wins and led the points classification.

It’s been an unusual week in professional cycling, with another race in South Africa having to be cancelled after riders were blown from their bikes by strong winds.

The comedic scenes have proved especially popular on social media.
