Cannabis-based drug for anxious dogs could be in Australia within a year

Does you dog freak out during storms or when they’re left alone?

An overseas company thinks they have the trick, and it’s to give them a cannabis-based drug.

Nutraceutical company Creso Pharma is vying for Australian approval for a hemp plant product for dogs which could be available within a year.

A team from the company is travelling the country to attempt to educate vets and ‘reduce the stigma associated with cannabis-based therapies’.

“It’s not going to be medicinal cannabis for pets.. more like neutraceauticals for pets,” CEO of Cresco Pharma Dr Miri Halperin Wenli said.

“The only negativity is that people don’t understand the difference between medicinal cannabis – it’s not medicinal cannabis.”

But not all vets agree it is the answer.

“When you sedate an animal you stop it’s ability to express the symptoms so the owner perceives the animal is more relaxed when in fact they’re more aware of what’s going on,” Veterinarian Dr Karen Davies said.

Dr Davies recommends using sound apps to help your pet get used to the noise.
