Australia’s Daria Gavrilova has been knocked out of the Miami Open, crashing to a 6-2 6-2 second round defeat to Czech world No.36 Lucie Safarova on Thursday (Friday AEDT).
Safarova, the 2015 French Open runner-up, broke 23rd-seed Gavrilova five times while only dropping her serve once.
Czech second seed Karolina Pliskova, a finalist at last year’s US Open, had no trouble beating 86th-ranked Madison Brengle 6-1 6-3.
Slovakian fourth seed Dominika Cibulkova beat Paraguayan qualifier Veronica Cepede Royg 6-3 6-2 to set up a third-round clash with Belgian Kirsten Flipkens, who outlasted 29th-seeded Croatian Ana Konjuh 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (6-8) 6-2.
Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat Yaroslava Shvedova 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 6-0, 26th-seed Mirjana Lucic-Baroni defeated Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 2-6 7-6 (7-2), China’s Zhang Shuai advanced past Italy’s Sara Errani 4-6 6-4 7-5 and Yulia Putintseva easd past Carina Witthoeft (Germany) 6-4 6-4.
Prominent players in second-round action later today include fifth seed Agnieszka Radwanska, sixth-seeded French Open champion Garbine Muguruza and 12th-seed Caroline Wozniacki.
