Did you reach for a jacket yesterday? Don’t worry, you weren’t alone.

Perth shivered through its coldest March day in nine years when the mercury failed to crack the 20C barrier.

Bureau of Meteorology figures show the city hit just 19.8C on a mostly overcast and gloomy start to the weekend. The last time a March daytime temperature dipped that low was March 31, 2008 when it was just 18.4C.

The temperature in Perth at 1pm today had reached 21.8C

It continues a rollercoaster year for weather to date, with summer failing to arrive until the start of autumn. In the first 11 days of this month, Perth basked in nine 30C-plus days before more mild weather set in last weekend.

The highest temperature recorded this month was 37.7C on March 1, while the mercury fell to just 10.3C last night, the lowest overnight temperature so far this month.

But never fear, warmer weather is on the way, with temperatures expected to settle in the mid-to high 20C all his week.

This week’s forecast:

Tomorrow: 26C, mostly sunny.

Tuesday: 25C, showers, possible late storm.

Wednesday: 29C, morning showers, possible early storm.

Thursday: 26C, possible shower.

Friday: 26C, possible shower.
