A Czech man has been charged after he tried to check-in a bag filled with thousands of insects on a flight out of Perth.
The man tried to smuggle 4226 Australian insects, 27 spiders and seven scorpions in boxes, bottles and zip-lock bags out of Perth International Airport to Abu Dhabi on February 20.
After an Australian Border Force examination, he admitted having the specimens and was arrested and charged.
Most of the insects were packed in wood shavings in ethyl acetate.
The man appeared in Perth Magistrate’s Court on Friday and was fined $2000.
An investigation showed he had exported insects all over the world.
