There are fears for Nick Riewoldt’s playing future after the St Kilda superstar appeared to suffer a serious knee injury.
The former captain went down in the final quarter of the Saints Round 1 loss to Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.
In scenes reminiscent of Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy last year, there was almost silence around the ground as the stretcher was brought out.
Riewoldt flew for a mark and has he went to change direction, his knee appeared to buckle and the forward went down in agony.
Riewoldt underwent a knee reconstruction in his debut AFL season after being drafted with the No.1 pick before claiming the AFL Rising Star in his second season.
It was a bitter blow for the Saints as Melbourne ended a losing streak that dated back to 2007.
TV coverage showed Riewoldt walking around the rooms and along the boundary after the incident, in some positive news.
