Wiggins named Albany’s sporting best

Teenage cycling star Craig Wiggins added Albany’s highest individual sporting honour to his already increasing list of achievements after claiming his first Albany Sportsperson of the Year title tonight.

For the third straight year Wiggins was also named as the junior category winner at the 2016 Wellington and Reeves Albany Sportsperson of the Year awards gala presentations at the Albany Entertainment Centre, following another dominant year.

Wiggins’ third consecutive junior title came courtesy of his 2016 which saw him continue to progress through the cycling ranks, winning a silver medal at the Cycling Australia Track National Championships in the under-19 team sprint final, coming within 0.4 seconds of national gold.

The 17-year-old was also named WA male road rider of the year and under-19 make road rider of the year.

Wiggins’ breakthrough win came against stiff competition from Olympian Sonja Johnson and veteran surf lifesaver Rob Slattery.

Johnson ended the reign of lever-action rifle shooter Steve Hurley to claim the senior title for the fourth time after narrowly missing selection for the Australian Olympic eventing team for the Rio Olympics.

The South Stirling farmer earlier won the Sydney International Horse Trials CCI3* wirth Parkiarrup Illicit Liaison and was part of the winning Australian team in the Nations Cup in Germany.

The ever-consistent Slattery returned to claim the veteran category once more after winning the title in 2014 when was crowned the overall winner also.

Slattery took home four gold medals and two bronze medals from the World Masters Championships.

The 44th gala awards evening recognised the outstanding performance and the contribution by athletes to their chosen sport.

Albany’s sporting elite heard from Albany-bred Paralympic triathlete Brant Garvey who was the guest speaker at the awards.
