- Cara Jane Farrar Peterson, 52, discovered her childhood friend is her half sister
- She was initially introduced to Karen Smith, 51, as her step sister growing up
- They lost touch and reunited, before taking DNA tests after noting resemblance
- Kara discovered identity of her real father Michael Farrow, feels like she belongs
- The discovery means her half sister Melanie Webb is in fact her full sister
A woman was thrilled when she discovered her childhood friend was in fact her half-sister following a five-decade long search for her biological father.
Cara Jane Farrar Peterson, 52, said she finally feels like she ‘belongs somewhere’ after being re-introduced to Karen Smith, 51, as a half-sister decades after the pair first met as friends in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.
Cara, a mother of seven, had always yearned to know the identity of her biological father but faced difficulty as her mother Linda Powell, 74, was married six times and spent time in hospital due to mental health issues.
As a result Cara and her sister Melanie – who also shares a father with Karen and whom Cara had grown up believing was a half-sister – spent stretches of their childhood in care.
However the true relation between Cara, Melanie, Karen and their father, Michael Farrow, was revealed after they turned to the Jeremy Kyle Show for a free DNA test.

But 50 years later Cara, who volunteers in a charity shop, has finally found solace in the knowledge that her former best friend Karen (seen) is in fact her half-sister, after a friend created a family tree
Growing up, Cara and Karen were inseparable at school, but lost touch when Cara was taken into care (Cara seen as a schoolgirl)
However, the pair reconnected via Facebook in 2015, which spurred Cara on to find out if the pair were related when she noticed the pair looked similar in pictures (Karen as a school girl)
Cara is now making up for lost time with her sister and half-sister.
She said: ‘It’s just an indescribable feeling – I’ve missed out on so much. It’s been difficult and I’ve missed out on a lot of things with Karen… It’s just changed who I am, I always felt like a lost soul and I finally feel like I belong somewhere.
‘I just wish I could go back and have stayed close to my half-sister because I really had nothing. It’s like we always had a connection, even though we didn’t know we were actually sisters.’
Ms Powell and Mr Farrow were parents to daughter Melanie Webb, 54, when Ms Powell discovered she was expecting another child.
However Ms Powell was having an affair at the time and told Mr Farrow the other man was the father. Mr Powell went on to have daughter Karen with another woman.

Karen and Cara went to school together and were ‘inseparable’. However they lost touch when Cara was taken into care.

With the help of a family friend, Cara began to piece together a family tree and found her father’s name was listed as ‘Christopher Archer’ on her birth certificate.
However she was not convinced Mr Archer was her father, believing it was actually Mr Farrow, Karen and Melanie’s father.
A DNA test conducted by the Jeremy Kyle show, in an episode which aired last week, revealed Cara’s hunch had been correct and than Mr Farrow was her father.
Cara’s (right) newfound biological father Michael Farrow, 75, had been told by her mother Linda Powell, 74, in 1966 that he was not the father to their second child (seen with Melanie as young girls)
However after the family took the DNA test on Jeremy Kyle, the results revealed Michael Farrow was her father, meaning that Melanie was her full sister
It meant Karen, whom she had believed to be just a friend, was her half-sister, while her half-sister Melanie was actually her ‘full’ sister.
Mr Farrow initially did not believe he was Cara’s father because of Linda’s affair but said he is now delighted with the DNA results.
While Cara is enjoying discovering her new family, she is no longer in contact with her mother.
She said: ‘My mum never wanted me at all and I say I do not have a mother. I don’t call my mother mum anymore – she’s dead to me.
‘I’ve never had an identity, I’ve never had a birth certificate or really known where I came from. I now know that my sister’s dad is my dad and Melanie is my full sister.
‘I also have a new half-brother and half-sister – my mum hid it from me all that time.’
She added: ‘I’ve missed out on a lot of things, I missed out on Karen’s wedding and other family events.
‘I have loads more nephews now – a family wedding is a family event and I wish I had been there. I just feel like after 52 years I finally know who I am, it’s changed my whole life.’
