Worth patronising

The Black Series Patron has three big internal living areas and a dining space that gets you off road and out of the elements without being cramped.

Its two pull-out queen-size bedrooms are big enough to house all the family while the table and chairs in the lounge can be turned into another bed.

This camper is the result of 12 years research and development.

The extender of this forward-folding hard-floor model creates the three living areas under the main tent body.

It starts with a 100x50x4mm one-piece draw bar that runs from the hitch to the twin fully engineered rear recovery points. The chassis rails are fully hot-dipped galvanised, with a further deadener applied to the undersides for longevity.

The coil sprung independent trailing arm suspension with twin shock absorbers either side provide a good off-road ride. The van rides on Black Series 16×9-inch custom alloy wheels which have a loading capacity of 955kg each, and is finished off with 12-inch electric brakes and two spare wheels fitted to a tilting loading rack fitted with gas struts.

Up front is a poly-block coupling, swing-up pneumatic jockey wheel, Anderson plug connector to charge the battery and a handle to move the trailer.

The independent suspension has dual shock absorbers and coil springs.

In front of the main tub are retainers for twin jerry cans and two 9kg gas cylinders which are protected by a stone screen. Underneath the rear is a single 100-litre stainless-steel water tank protected with a cover plate.

The two major box components on the van are finished in strong zincanneal with baked enamel silver paint.

In front of the main tub with the fold-over and extender, is a big box that houses a fridge slide capable of fitting a 95-litre Waeco fridge/freezer.

Another hatch has a full-width pole storage and a slide-out pantry. On the other side is a similar hatch and slide-out.

There is also a dust-proof hatch for the electronics controls, battery isolator switch, individually-fused circuit switches and an LED water tank indicator.

The Patron has twin 100Ah AGM batteries as standard. There are plenty of power outlets, LED lighting throughout and a ventilating fan in the fridge compartment.

The batteries can only be charged via the Anderson plug or a pair of alligator clamp connectors with a separate charger.

The fold-over and extender process is relatively easy. The winch can be used for single-handed erection of the main fold-over section which can be set up in a minute.

The tent is huge with 22sqm of living space, a 100mm high-density mattress, insect- proof mesh and tough double-stitch canvas walls.

It’s well-ventilated with big windows and doors and pop-out awnings on the main windows.

The full-length tropical roof opens automatically with the main tent. Entry is by an easy folding stairwell. Inside are the camper queen beds either end complete with privacy screen to the master on the front.

The slide-out stainless-steel kitchen has a three-burner Smev stove, sink, full-length folding bench, drawers and another pull-out shelf.

Hot water is supplied from a portable gas HWS. It feeds the detachable ensuite that comes as standard in the full package price.

A full-length tilting boat rack completes the picture.

The Black Series comes with a five-year structural warranty.
